Cheeses That Don’t Have To Be Refrigerated

Cheeses That Don’t Have To Be Refrigerated

Are you running out of room in your refrigerator at home? Or maybe you just want to try some more authentic cheeses with origins from around the world? We often associate cheese with storage in the refrigerator here in the United States, but not all cheeses require refrigeration right away. Try out some of these cheeses that don’t have to be refrigerated for your next meal.

Parmigiano Reggiano

Parmigiano Reggiano is one of the most popular cheeses in the world. You may know it as Parmesan, which is how many people outside of Europe identify this cheese. Parmigiano is a hard, dry cheese that many people often grate into shredded cheese. Due to how dry it is, you won’t need to refrigerate this cheese, though refrigeration can help it last even longer.

Pecorino Romano

Pecorino Romano is one of the few sheep’s milk-based cheeses that doesn’t require refrigeration right away. This cheese has a long shelf life and should be stored in a different way. Experts recommend wrapping Pecorino in food-grade paper or aluminum foil, then setting it in a cool, dark, and dry area until you are ready to serve it.

More Aged Cheeses

There are a whole variety of aged cheeses that don’t need refrigeration. Most aged cheeses are hard and have very little moisture, which means they can last at room temperature. Some more popular aged cheeses include aged cheddar, aged gouda, and more.

Processed Cheese

Typically, processed cheeses like American cheese don’t need to be refrigerated either, at least until you open them. Some common examples of these are canned cheese, squeezable cheese, and sealed loaves or blocks of American cheese. Of course, it’s always best to check the food label for specific instructions on the product.

Whether you’re interested in cheeses that don’t have to be refrigerated to save space in your icebox, or you love cheese and want to try a new variety, these examples are a great place to start. And if you’re looking for a quality cheese store in NYC to find some great aged cheeses, check out Vincent’s Meat Market in-store or online!
